Higher Steps
It is so hard a test--
It wrenches my soul
To stand by and watch
As you, my close friend,
Must journey toward
And travel through
Your Gethsemane...
Wanting to turn you around,
Longing to ease your burdens--
To share them,
And to make them light,
I tremble.
Like Peter of old,
I would leap to your rescue
And cut off at least
One ear--or perhaps more
In my fervent zeal
To be your true friend!
And yet, with my spirit's eyes,
I can see you
Turning with love
And reaching out
To gently heal your enemy
As did One before. . .
So then--
I must pass my test
As you pass yours--
By Reaching for His Hand
And following
The higher steps
Of our Savior . . . .
